Santorini Honeymoon Guide

Oia Santorini at sunset

Why is Santorini the perfect honeymoon destination?

Few places I’ve been to instantly feel as magical as Santorini. It may sound twee, but with its sugar-cube houses cascading down the volcanic cliffs, sunsets that really do stop you in your tracks, and candlelit dinners overlooking the caldera, it’s easy to see why this tiny Greek island has become one of the world’s most infamous honeymoon spots.

Despite its fame, Santorini still offers some quiet corners, you just have to look a little harder in the peaceful vineyards, black-sand beaches and hidden tavernas in the hills.

  • Iconic views – perhaps one of the most photographed destinations in the world with those whitewashed terraces, blue domes, and sunset skies over the caldera.
  • Luxury & tranquillity – boutique hotels, infinity pools and an unmistakable sense of calm that makes you feel another world away.
  • Magical sunsets – Oia is perhaps one of the most magical places in the world to watch the sunset.
  • Adventure – explore dramatic, volcanic shores, sail the caldera or visit nearby islands for the day.

Quick Santorini honeymoon planning tips

  • Best time to visit: April–June and September–October offer warm weather, clear skies, and fewer crowds. July–August is the busiest (and hottest).
  • How to get there: Fly directly into Santorini Airport (JTR) or take a ferry from Athens or neighbouring islands like Naxos or Mykonos.
  • Getting around: Santorini is really small so renting a car or ATV will give you the freedom to explore. Rads are easy to navigate, and distances are short. Taxis are available but limited, so it’s always best to pre-book where possible.
  • Where to stay: Oia for romance and those postcard-perfect sunsets, Imerovigli for privacy and views, Fira for buzz and convenience, and Akrotiri for a quieter, more local feel. Be sure to book accommodation early as the best cliffside hotels fill up months in advance.
  • Experiences: Sunset sailing, wine tastings, spa retreats, and candlelit dinners overlooking the caldera.

where is santorini?

Santorini makes up part of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea, about 200 km southeast of mainland Greece.

language

The local language is Greek. Although English is widely spoken, especially in hotels and restaurants, it’s always handy to learn a few Greek phrases to show respect and connect with locals.
Handy phrases:
Yia! – Hello
Parakalo – Please
Efharistw – Thank you
Parakalo – You’re welcome
Signomi – I’m sorry/ excuse me
Poso kani – How much is it?

Currency & payments

The currency used is the Euro (€). Cards are accepted almost everywhere, though it’s useful to have cash for taxis or small family-run tavernas. ATMs are widely available.

closest airport

Fly in to Santorini (JTR), located near Kamari and around 15 minutes from Fira.

safety

Santorini is very safe. Roads can be narrow and pretty busy in peak season so take care when driving scooters or ATVs.

health & travel insurance

Santorini has good healthcare facilities, but travel insurance is always recommended to cover medical emergencies, lost luggage and trip cancellations.

Pharmacies are easy to find in Fira and Oia.

wi-fi & connectivity

There is strong coverage across the island, with most hotels and cafés offering free Wi-Fi. If you need constant internet access, consider getting a local SIM card or a Travel eSIM for Greece.
